Keywords are becoming more important. The future of the internet - the semantic web - is in a large part based on giving more meaning and structuring content on web pages.

Today the internet is based on humans viewing and reading pages. The vision of the semantic web is to allow software agents to take over many of the tasks we do on the internet. For example if we wanted to go from Boston to New York on public transportation for a meeting a software agent could check my calendar, bus schedules, trains schedules, and plane schedules. It would then come back to me with different options, including time schedules and prices. I would then click on the best option, my credit card would be charged and a ticket would print out. A reminder would be placed on my calendar.

This can only be done if their is agreed upon tags or structure on the various transportation web sites.

The Future is Now

A glimpse of how this works can be seen on Froogle. If you search for a item that is not popular (try "Israel diamond errings) you can see that the top sites have information that is structured because Froogle is receiving the information from data bases instead of web sites--the semantic web! You don't have to go to each site--a software agent is aggregating the information for you. Additional sites which are not structured appear further down. These sites are typical web pages and Froogle attempts to look for items and prices. Since there is no structure Froogle has a warning: The results below were automatically extracted from web pages. These results cannot be sorted or restricted by price.

The success of the semantic web will in part depend on insuring that sites are honest with their tagging. Otherwise we may repeat the sad story of the keyword meta tag.

This is just the tip of the iceberg. There is lots of information on the semantic web. My favorite semantic web site is here.
